Woolworths Launceston

Launceston City

Vos Construction & Joinery was contracted to demolish existing structures, and design and construct the new 4,000m2 Woolworths supermarket in the Launceston CBD.

A number of challenges were overcome with this project including an eclectic mix of soil types ranging from clays to river silt, and high water table ground conditions.  Carrying out major construction works on the corner of two arterial roads. As an example, an otherwise straightforward precast panel erection had to involve consultation with multiple stakeholders such as local government, the Department of State Growth, and TasNetworks. Works were completed without complaint.

The finished product is architecturally pleasing, and convenient; considerably improving the amenity of Launceston’s CBD. The extensive use of glazing provides a level of natural light, in an environment that usually relies heavily on artificial lighting. The project also alludes to the retail heritage of Launceston, identifying that the original Roelf Vos supermarket (a chain that was acquired by Woolworths) occupied the building on the adjacent corner of York and Wellington streets.
